6. Yayoi Kusama - Dotty

Japanese painter Yayoi Kusama, who celebrated her 95th birthday on March 22, 2024, is known for her dot patterns (dots), which she uses to decorate canvases, sculptures, people, animals and Louis Vuitton handbags. The crowds in museums with spacy mirror rooms designed by her are often so large that the visit has to be limited to 30 seconds per visitor. In the 1960s, she ran body painting studios in New York where people were allowed to paint naked models. However, due to the bad behavior of Japanese business people, she denied her compatriots access. In his 40th comic biography, writer and illustrator Willi Blöss offers a fast-paced flyover of the life of the artist, who was admitted to a psychiatric ward at the age of 48 and has been sharing her therapy with the world through art activities ever since.
